Thank you to all who have registered their students for the Religious Education program.  Parents/guardians of all returning students & of all students who are new to our religious education program need to register their children.  If your child(ren) are not yet registered, please complete the forms mailed to you this past week, stop in this week at the parish office, or download the forms from the parish website www.stjohnspeosta.org (Visit "Groups" on the right side of the homepage and then choose "St. John's Religious Ed") .& return them as quickly as possible by either dropping them off or mailing them to the parish house.  We need your registrations by Sept. 1st to be able to plan for this upcoming year.  The 1st class for students & parents will be Sept. 8th.  Please note that we have expanded St. John’s Religious Education program this fall to include afternoon RE program for grades 1-4!  Classes for grades 1-4 will be offered at 2 times:  4-5:15 p.m. & 6:30-7:45 p.m.  All classes for grades 5-10 will meet from 6:30 -7:45 p.m.  Please be sure to mark your choice of class time at the top of the first page of your registration form.  If you have any questions, please call Marybeth Wagner (DRE) at the parish office at 582-4217.

]]> 2010-07-16T00:00:00-05:00 SJ - Sale of Property http://www.stjohnspeosta.org/n/sj_-_sale_of_property.html http://www.stjohnspeosta.org/n/sj_-_sale_of_property.html As I announced last Sunday at St. John’s Masses, we are happy to finally accept an offer for the sale of the property across the street from the church.  It will be sold for $750,000.00 to A. J. Spiegel.  There were others whose bids were less.  We are grateful for their interest.  We are also thankful to our parish realtors, Ken Kress, Barb Hermsen & Sheri Greenwood.  They put in a lot of time and effort to get the property sold.  Most of their behind the scenes work went unnoticed, but it was a tremendous effort.  A big thank you to our parish council for their extra meetings and unanimous approval.  We were all hoping that the eight acres would bring a higher price.  But given the length of time the property has been on the market, it appears we did sell it for its market price.

      We are happy to sell to Mr. Spiegel especially since he donated 15 acres for the new school.  Also, A.J. will do a good job of developing the land and make Peosta an even better place to live, and he will continue to work with NICC.  All these are positives that we can be thankful for.

      The time schedule for this transaction and many contingencies are still being worked out.  The proceeds will be payable to St. John’s.  The parish will then issue a check to the Seton Capital Campaign as previously approved. Building may then proceed!  Thanks be to God!

]]> 2010-07-09T00:00:00-05:00 Seton Capital Campaign Update http://www.stjohnspeosta.org/n/seton_capital_campaign_update-0.html http://www.stjohnspeosta.org/n/seton_capital_campaign_update-0.html Many have asked about the status of the Seton Capital Campaign.  Our last correspondence was a letter mailed to all donors in December.  That letter stated the following: Although it has been rather quiet, please rest assured that we continue to forge ahead looking for every possible opportunity to make this a reality.  Most recently, St. John the Baptist parish in Peosta has decided to sell the approximately 9 acres of land across the street from the school. As of October 13th the land is listed with a realtor. They in turn have agreed to donate the proceeds from the sale of the land to the Seton Capital Campaign.  Currently we have 3.6 million dollars in pledges with an additional estimated 1 million dollars in the sale of the land. This brings us to our total of 4.6 million dollars & will allow us to build the new PK – 5 grade building in Peosta & complete the necessary building upgrades to the Farley Center.   

The realtor has assured us that there is some interest in the land & it is our hope that there is some movement on the sell this spring.  We will let you know as soon as this goal becomes a reality.  Until that time, please continue to pray for the success of the project & ask God to bless all of those who have been so generous.  There is still time to make a pledge to the capital campaign.  If you are interested, please contact Toni (556-5967) at our Peosta center.  She will be happy to assist you in this.  Once again, thank you to all who have supported the campaign.   Mary Smock, Principal, SetonCatholic School

Excitement is building as plans to build the new Seton Elementary School in Peosta have been announced.  This long awaited news was shared first with the five parishes’ councils.  As the word spread I announced it last Sunday & in the local papers.  Also included are improvements at St. Joseph’s School in Farley where 6-8th grades will remain.  St. Joseph’s is turning over ownership to the Seton Corporation.  We will have work days in the building on the weekend of July 16th & 17th.  All 5 parishes are asked to send volunteers to help.  Hours will be Friday, 4-8 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to finish.

We had a wonderful time at “Baobab Blast” Vacation Bible School this past week, with 122 children participating & 40 youth & adults serving as Crew Leaders, Station Leaders & helpers in many different ways!  We had fun playing games, being creative & doing experiments, all while learning about Bible stories which told of people who trustedGod, learned to love their families, followed Jesus’ calling,cared for others & shared their faith with the world community.  During the week many people brought in non-perishable food items to be donated to a local food pantry, A big THANK YOU to everyone who helped out in any way & especially also to our decoration gurus:  Ed Goedken who built our “marketplace” stage & Mark Wagner who made our baobab tree & who also spoke to us on Wednesday about his experiences living for 2 years by a baobab tree in Benin, West Africa.  VBS could not have happened without the help & participation of all of you!
